The Race

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is the world’s toughest row. It’s a challenge that will take rowers more than 3,000 miles west from La Gomera in the Canary Islands, to Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua. The race begins on December 12th 2023, and the WaveBreakers are ready for the challenge.

As four women who love adventure, water and a challenge, this race will push them, both physically and mentally to a new level not experienced before. They will battle with sleep deprivation, salt sores, and the physical extremes inflicted by the race. And be left only with their own thoughts, the expanse of the ocean, and the job of getting safely to the other side.

More people have climbed Everest, than completed this row. Just getting to the start line requires extensive technical, mental and physical preparation. That preparation started in January 2022 and will continue until the day they leave La Gomera, nearly 2 years later.

Each member of the crew brings their own qualities, skills and determination to the boat – but the unifying ambition of raising money to enable a better future is the driving force behind every stroke taken to make the crossing.

The crew will:

~ row 3000 nautical miles

~ use a 28ft boat with two cabins

~ row in excess of 1.5million oar strokes

~ tackle waves up to 30 feet

~ suffer with sleep deprivation, sea sickness and hunger

Each crew member will:

~ row two hours, rest two hours, 24/7

~ burn 5000 calories a day

~ drink 10 litres of water a day

~ lose an average of 8kg in weight
